I know there are a lot of resolved questions on teenage mood swings already, but I don't feel they fit my situation exactly.
So, my mood varies widely throughout the day. There is no pattern. I can have only one mood swing a day or I can have several. Just depends.
My main moods are the same almost every time. My weirdest mood is my cleaning one. I clean everything in sight (feels like I have OCD in this mood...I get irritated when I find something out of place or dirty then I fix it). I can't sit down for more than 2 minutes, let alone focus on one thing. My mind can't keep up with all the thoughts that fly through my head. Seems like this mood lasts on average for 3 hours. Sometimes it's longer, sometimes shorter.
Before I have my cleaning mood, I'm usually unmotivated and lazy. I feel like laying in bed and sleeping. The future seems bleak. I think a lot about death. Not about hurting myself or anything, just what people would think if I died, if they would cry or anything. It's hard to explain. Last summer I had a few severe bouts of depression and they resembled this mood.
Other moods in between the 2 main ones are:
-I want to exercise constantly. I obsess over what I eat. I never stopped eating or purged though.
-School mood. All I want to do is read and obsess over college. It's really odd.
-Content mood. I'm calm. I wish this mood would last but it's usually the shortest of them all.
I'm extremely aggravated all the time. Someone could say something that is completely fine and I'll get really angry. I try not to snap, but most of the time I do. It's completely sporadic. One thing I know makes me extremely angry is self pity. If anyone shows a sign of self pity, I despise them and want to get away from them. Once again...no idea why!
I get easily obsessed with things, but the obsession lasts at most 2 weeks.
I've been having these mood swings since I was probably 9 or 10. I'm 15 now. They have increased in intensity. I don't think it's hormones, but who knows. If it has any relevance, my Dad's side of the family has a history of mental illness. I had mild Tourettes when I was younger, my sister and uncle are Schizophrenic, and my brother and Dad both have anger issues.
Any help or advice is appreciated.Teenage mood swings? Advice please?
sounds like you have several issues going on and you seem to be aware of them. That is good. Have you tried journaling some of these so that you can show a doctor/therapist what is going on with you,say during a weeks period.?
You might try going on the web site NAMI. org and look up some of they symptoms you describe. Sometime Bipolar can mimic OCD in some ways. Also aggravation is very typical in bipolar disorder.
You mention hormones, but a simple blood test can rule those out. or in. With a history of mental issues, it increases the likelihood that you may have something going on.
Is there any history of alcohol or substance usage with you or family members, that will increase Bi Polar symptoms dramatically.
You might like to know if you don't already there are a lot of new medications out there that work great on symptoms like you describe. The fact that you are recognizing it at a young age will help you get stable before you get into college. I would for sure talk to mom about setting up a GP appointment and if your GP feels like you need to see a pych. then he/she can set up an appointment.
